Thoughts on the Creative Cloud?
This question deals with an announcement by Adobe this week that it is no longer going to be selling copies of their software. Moving forward all new versions of their Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, etc.) will now be subscription based and can be accessed for a monthly fee.
There’s been some backlash already. I know David Hobby isn’t too happy about it. I for one am ok with it. I have been using Creative Cloud for the last year and I actually love it. I get every new version and I have access to the entire suite of applications. It has saved my rear a few times when I needed to do something with one of their apps that I didn’t purchase earlier. I simply downloaded the app I needed and got to work.
I think we are going to see a lot more of this moving forward. I can’t do my job without Adobe products and I look at their monthly fee as a cost of doing business just like my monthly fees for Internet, phone, alarm system, etc, etc. The amount of money I spent upgrading Adobe products and purchasing what I needed compared to just paying a monthly fee isn’t a huge difference to justify me picking up a torch and pitchfork and calling for the death of Adobe. :)
ETA - Lightroom will still be available as a stand alone purchase. That’s a good thing.
